On an island, the exiled Prospero employs illusion and manipulation in a plot to restore his daughter, Miranda, to rule in the duchy of Milan.

A storm shipwrecks Prospero’s usurping brother, Antonio, and his confederate, Alonso, to set the conflict. Shakespeare’s electric poetry condemns Antonio, redeems Alonso and commits Miranda to Alonso’s son, Ferdinand. This is forceful drama from the all-time master.

Conor McPherson’s drama is set in a hardscrabble village near Dublin, where four whiskeysoaked Irishmen confront the devil—though only one of them is in on that fateful secret. It’s a play that blends humor and desperation, a character-rich narrative that shows us the painful perils of our human souls and our slender chances for redemption.

“a mythic, restless play that, weirdly, owes a little something to a christmas carol … this prolific author’s masterpiece … and far and away the best irish play since the glory days of samuel beckett … — chicago tribune”Sharky Harkin, a recovering alcoholic, has come home to help his blinded brother, Richard—a belittling beast. The two are joined on Christmas Eve by a hapless, drunken friend and by Sharky’s former rival in love, who brings in a mysterious and oddly elegant stranger. Their card game puts Sharky’s soul into play.

This 2006 drama debuted in McPherson’s native Ireland and its Broadway run earned four Tony nominations. Companies from Dublin to Budapest to Chicago have staged this compelling drama from the author of The Weir.

Every instrumentalist brings individual talent to a hot jazz ensemble. Their performances in the spotlight culminate two weeks of workshops.

Our Jazz & Cabaret workshops and performances were pioneered by Anne Phillips and Bob Kindred, longtime fixtures of the Manhattan music scene. Guitarist Paul Meyers and pianist Matt Perri have been mainstays of the program. Jazz & Cabaret has also welcomed the talents of saxophonist Anton Schwartz and keyboard artist Brian Kinsella.

“lerner and loewe’s masterpiece… the perfect musical…”
— new york timesFirst City Players is excited to start off a great season with the show that remains the high water mark for musical theatre. All other stage musicals are judged against My Fair Lady. This magnificent entertainment features a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, it’s the story of a stuffy English phonetics expert who takes up the challenge of turning a rough Cockney flower girl into the semblance of a well-bred lady. The heart-tugging innocence of Eliza Doolittle, the flinty determination of Professor Henry Higgins, the exotic denizens of London’s higher and lower social reaches, all set amidst some of theatre’s most sublime songs—you can’t help but fall in love with this fair lady.

FAMOUS, FABULOUS SONGS!
“Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?”
“With a Little Bit of Luck”
“I Could Have Danced All Night”
“The Rain in Spain”
“On the Street Where You Live”
“Get Me to the Church on Time”
“I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face”
…And more!

What’s wrong with nine-year-old Jesse? He can’t sit still, he curses, he raps. Teacher says it’s A.D.D. Dad says he’s “just a boy!” Mom wants answers. Is Jesse dysfunctional or different? Don’t we all have A.D.D., to a degree? Lisa Loomer’s play is a hilarious, provocative and poignant look at a family and an epidemic. Are we so tuned in to our 24/7,info-rich world that we tune out what matters?

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PLAY IS RATED PG13 FOR CONTENT AND LANGUAGE
